In your Barracks, Skills tab, you can spend your Skill Points and set your soldier's specialization, known as a spec.

Skill Tree

  • The skills section of the Barracks is collectively known as the Skill Tree. Each row of the tree is a Branch, but can sometimes be referred to as a Tree as well.
  • Every PMC has the same skill tree, but the weapons are named differently. They are usually referred to as a Tier of weapon. The Assault Rifle has three Tiers, the first is issued by default, the second is unlocked in Skill Tier 2, and the third at Skill Tier 4., so the rifles are called a Tier 1 Assault Rifle, Tier 2 Assault Rifle, and Tier 3 Assault Rifle. Each faction's rifles handle differently, but rifles of the same Tier are more similar in different factions than a Tier 1 or Tier 2 rifle in the same faction.

Skill Points

  • Skill points allow you to unlock new skills in the skill tree. Skills unlock new weapons, attachments, and gear, or passively improve your soldier.
  • You earn skill points every time you level up; starting with 1 at level one and ending with 60 points at level 60.
  • You do not need to put points in any row, and may begin with any.
  • Each row is separated into several Tiers.To access the next tier, you only need to put 2 skill points into the tier before it. You do not need to purchase every skill in a tree to move to the next Tier of a row.
  • Skills belong to five categories (Commando, Direct Action, Field Support, Marksman, and Rapid Assault) which determine what icon will appear beside your name when you are seen in battle. Since the category with the most points in it is used, soldiers are frequently mis-categorized. Category has no bearing on your Armory and there is no reason and is often impossible to select skills of one category.

The weapon c on the images is innacurate, along with a few missing armor types from DLCs, but the skill tree is correct for retail. Also note that the Trophies page is a JOKE and is not to be taken seriously, although it does provide a good laugh.
